You Herd? Maysev is BACK + a 42-second gem

Week 3 -- March 10th, 2025

This was an interesting week in my crate digging journey. I think the Bricknasty discovery from last week was a generational find - they’re just a really tough act to follow. HOWEVER, I think Maysev is filling the Ireland-shaped hole in my heart rn by dropping back-to-back bangers. That + the fact that I found each of these songs in a different way… definitely not a run-of-the-mill week for music exploration.

What caught my ear

This one has a fun discovery story: I found it in a (kind of?) upscale restaurant/tea house/bar while catching up w/ Jess. There was a pause in our convo and I heard the gentle breakbeat + muted rhythm section waft into my ears from the overhead speakers. I said something like “oh wait, this song is cool” and we both listened for a sec while I waited for Shazam to work its magic.

Jess noted that Take Van’s vocals feel like a nod to PinkPantheress, and she totally nailed it - they have that same nonchalant, who-even-uses-vibrato vibe. A great easy-listening song, no matter your mood.

What caught my ear

Maysev is so back. The man dropped “Left” like two weeks ago and he’s already in the newsletter again with another heater, this time partnering up with one of my all-time favorites in the Drum & Bass world: The Caracal Project.

This track feels like a 3-minute, 44-second demonstration of pure technical virtuosity from two unbelievable producers (and its a melodic masterpiece too). I usually don’t even like instrumentals that much, but these guys are so cracked that they make you forget vocals even exist.

What caught my ear

I was rigorously debating whether to include this or not because it’s literally only 42 seconds of music lol, but I decided it’s totally worth it. SoundCloud has a tendency to spit out random gems every once in a while, and this is one of them. It’s basically the first verse + chorus of Dua Lipa’s “Pretty Please” if it was made by a neo soul producer who apparently has no profile or existence anywhere on the Internet.

I find that hilarious and also mysterious, so let’s all lock in for 42 seconds and appreciate this snippet from the person with no face, n-47.
