You Herd? London is uppp

Week 6 -- March 31st, 2025

Every now and then I come across a new song (as in just-released) that takes me back to a specific period in my life. This week, when the vocal-driven instrumental of “less is more (with Skepta)” hit my ears, I was instantly transported to my high-school freshman bedroom. I used to blast grime classics like “Man Don’t Know” and “Shutdown” in my earphones every night, pacing up and down the room filled with the manic energy of the genre bred on the streets of London. Safe to say: I was the coolest kid in Chicago (as far as I was concerned).

In my experience, the best artists love reinventing themselves and their sound - but that makes throwbacks like this all the more special.

The actual backstory behind this song is wild. YouTuber / producer PlaqueBoyMax (whose videos I watched briefly ages ago) casually dropped a collab with the living legend of Grime itself. There’s even a vid of them making the song on YouTube. That’s not even the craziest thing to me - the song is literally an undeniable heater. If this is your intro to grime, consider yourself blessed: welcome to the glorious world of music from across the pond.

The British prowess continues with JD. REID, London-based DJ/producer who can’t stop dropping unbelievable edits. This edit of SZA’s “I Hate U” transforms the tune into a club-ready breakbeat banger. Guy really makes you wait for the bass to hit but when it finally does at 1:03… maximum satisfaction.

A super interesting find for me - I don’t think I would usually gravitate to something like this, but Jadu Heart has caught my ear before with “AUX.” The coolest part is def at 0:46 when that weird, flanger-y bass hits your ears. It turns the song into something entirely different, and I love when artists include subtle sonic experiments like that in their tunes.
